Children are our future. I will always be the very best provider for them. Over the years, they have brought me so much joy as I have watched Wee Wise children grow to be fine young people.

Why I Became A Child Care Provider
Renee Gilliam

As founder and principal provider of Wee Wise Daycare, I am very happy to share my story with you.  In 1981 until 1999 I worked for the Federal Government at the Smithsonian Institution Protection Division.  My assignment was a gallery guard, I worked there for 18 years; and, in 1986 was promoted to the rank of sergeant.  Gaining the responsibility as a supervisor coupled with being a single mother of two young children with the reality of not being able to be there for them left me at times feeling overwhelmed.  Due to working day and night shifts, I found that I could not keep up and it became very stressful.  Taking notice of everything that was transpiring in my life during that time, I decided to resign in 1999.  The situation forced me to consider other avenues for employment.  I realized how very important it was for me, having children so young, to be available for them and to take care of them.

Another thing I realized was that there were a lot of single mother’s struggling with the same problem, trying to find adequate and professional child care.  As for my children, they needed me, and I wanted to be there for them.  So I researched the topic of child care service in the state of Maryland.  After requesting and receiving more information I strongly felt that I could embark on a career as a child care provider.  Along with this feeling came reflection from my past of an elderly woman I ran into while grocery shopping who said that I would one day take care of children.  Therefore, I felt certain that it was the answer to help me and my family while earning a living even after my kids’ out grew the need for child care.

I knew the job was right for me because I cared about children and I knew how to relate to a little one needs while enjoying their company.  Something stirred up inside of me to create a special place for children whose parents must work. This compelled me to become a child care provider and to operate a business out of my home.   As I began taking care of children it became my passion and no work I had ever done before satisfied me more!
